GIZMO TO THE RESCUE
In the 90's, in the upstate town of Warwick, New York, we had a nice modest, two bedroom home which started out as a week-end retreat from the sins of the city. And into this haven of relaxation, we brought a dog by the name of Gizmo.
Fabian would spend a lot of time upstate while I was still working in the city. So, to fill up some of that time, he took Gizmo to obedience school. By the end of the school term, Gizmo would do most of the required commands such as stay and sit. This came in very handy when you were traveling with him. On command he would stay in the car until he was released and allowed to get out (leashed, when need be)
One time, mid-week, Gizmo had a barking fit and no amount of Fabian's commands would get him to stop. He would jump up on the bench beneath the windows in the family room, paws on the sill and continue to bark and growl. Finally, Fabian went to the window and saw a young man crouched down by the bushes in the front yard. Fabian went outside and asked the teenager, "Can I help you?"
"I was looking for the Johnson house" was the nervous reply.
"No one by that name lives here." And the boy hurriedly left.
As Gizmo continued to have his say, Fabian called the police. A car was dispatched to Waterbury Road and shortly after, a policeman came to our door and told Fabian that the young man had been apprehended and confessed to "casing several houses."
The story spread throughout the neighborhood and the next day, a framed certificate was delivered.
It reads "Gizmo is hereby awarded the medal of valor for being instrumental in the capture of the Waterbury Road burglar. This is given by a grateful neighborhood on September 17, 1997."
Good dog!
