CHITA

At one time, there was a nightclub in New York named the "Grand Finale."  In early 1975 a few of us decided to go see the legendary Chita Rivera do her new act,    She did her customary singing and dancing with four back-up boys, interlaced with stories and songs about her various Broadway shows including "Bye, Bye Birdie" and "West Side Story" making it a  most enjoyable evening.

For her encore, she announced that she was going to do the "World Premier" of a new song by Kander and Ebb.  This was greeted by enthusiastic applause.   And she began. "Come on, boys, we're gonna paint the town."

It was lightning in a bottle and merited a standing ovation at the end.

The song, of course was "All That Jazz" from the new upcoming musical "Chicago," which she later starred in alongside Gwen Verdon in June of that year.   And to think, I heard the world premier.  New York was always full of surprises. And this was one of the best!  Just like Chita!

I have always been intrigued by puzzles of all sorts starting out with jigsaws in my youth and eventually graduating to Crosswords, Jumbles, Sudokus, Cyphers, Word Searches and a myriad of other types of posers.   And I do my fair share...….the New York Times Sunday Crossword is by far my favorite and I am proud to say that I can now solve it in ink!  (After many years with the no.2 and an eraser) On the contest side, I've entered here and there...……..New York magazine ran a weekly challenge back in the day and had numerous types of things to do.   For instance (and a classic)….Make up a name using other names (the old "if so-and-so married so-and-so" game). If Anna Maria Alberghetti married producer David Merrick, divorced him and married comedian Jackie Cannon, divorced him and married composer Norman Paris, her name would be Anna Merrick Cannon Paris.   You get the picture? THE BEAR

I have found one wonderful way of combatting the "blues," i.e. those days when you are overwhelmed with loneliness.  It is the bear.  And that is his name....."Bear."  He hails from an upstate New York department store called Newberry's in the town of Warwick.  He came into our lives for no particular reason.....he just looked like he needed some love.  So we took him in.  He resided with us up north among other assorted stuffed kin. And now in Florida, many years later, he sits beside me, fairly near, he - on the sofa, me - in my chair.  He's been there for quite some time now and watches me with his ebony black eyes, snuggled and cozy in his best (and only) sweater.  He did venture forth to sit beneath the Christmas tree last December,  but usually he is happy on the sofa (which I know he thinks belongs to him.)  And perhaps it does. BETTE AT THE COPA

I have seen Bette Midler live numerous times over the years including Carnegie Hall and various Broadway stages.  But the one time that was, and is very special to me was one night at the Copacabana in New York City. I can't remember how may of us were in our party (I'm thinking six) but I do recall we got the tickets well in advance of the Friday night performance on January 13, 1978.   Yes, it was Friday the 13th.  8 O'clock. We had a ringside table (No.3) and the show was all I expected it to be.   Bette was in great voice and sang all of her hits (up to that point in time).   Intermission came with the service of more drinks to the reveling crowd. There was a cover charge for two drinks beyond the price of the ticket (a mere Twenty dollars which is nothing by today's standards).  At any rate, the show went on again and she sang them all...."Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Chapel of Love," "Do You Want to Dance," etc. Except for one.
